What do you discuss here?

We discuss all strains of underground house music, from deep, vocal, and minimal house through to "nearly techno". If you are a member and aren't hearing many posts on your "preferred" strain of underground house, don't fret... try contributing a review yourself. You'll find many people coming out of the woodwork to add to the discussion.

What is the definition of tech-house?

The usual definition of tech-house: a more stripped-down take on house, using more synthetic-techno style sounds as opposed to the sampled disco and vocals of regular house. Some individuals also call hard techno with somewhat house-y percussion (clap/hihat patterns etc, like a lot of material on Sweden's Loop records) tech-house or 'techno-house'. Tech-y favourites on this list include the sounds of the UK scene (labels like 20:20 Vision, Primitive, Reverberations et al) and some of the more German stuff (Playhouse, Klang). That being said, the list was designed to include a broader scope - lots of deep house is discussed here, and the odd techno or electro record too. If you like it, and it's in the broad canvas of "underground house", you can talk about it here!

We know there are various definitions of tech-house, and they are all welcome, despite the prevailing flavour of the moment.

Is there a digest version?

Yes, the new Mailman server provides a digest version. Change your subscription options at the Subscription Management Console...

Why isn't my mail coming through to the list?

If you do not see a message you sent to the list, then check:
* That the address you are posting with/from is the same as the one you subscribed under (send a test message to yourself to see how it appears *exactly*). Addresses not subscribed are blocked in an attempt to prevent "spam" by outsiders.
You can always unsubscribe and resubscribe under your new address, but if you don't want your mail showing up there (i.e. you want to receive via one address and post via another) please email listadmin at techhouselist . org with your situation and special arrangements can be made.

Tech-house began life at the techno.ca server in Toronto, Canada.
Set up by Andrew Rosenfeld, it began life in 1998 when "313" (the mother of techno discussion lists) began to buckle under the strain of being the "first list anybody in the techno/rave community gets into".
G-Tech had split off sometime previously and covered the harder techno scene well... but there was a need for a forum to discuss other, deeper sounds.

Originally intended to be called simply "Underground House", a simple clerical error saw it renamed to "Tech-House" upon inception.
The initial months were a turbulent period, which saw soaring subscriptions in addition to the many crossovers from 313, but slowly the list settled down and found it's groove.
By early 2000, a strong list culture had developed and many more producers and label owners began joining the community, adding to the already substantial knowledge base.
In 2001 one of the lists founder members, Phil Williams, joined Andrew as co-administrator. Based in Wellington, New Zealand, Phil has heldthe reigns in the list admin role since 2002.

In it's many years of operation, The Techhouse List has grown into a mature, stable forum with a strong community of long-term members, all of whom help to maintain the highest level of discussion. We pride ourselves on mainatining the best, most on-topic forum on the web for discussing all shades of underground house music.

In February 2004 THL said a fond farewell to techno.ca, and moved into it's own premises at www.techhouselist.org in order to provide room for future expansion opportunities.

Tech-house wishes to particularly thank the following past and current members for their outstanding, long term contributions.
Merrick Brown, Andrew Duke, Mike Parsons, Asad Rizvi, Nick Oliver, Eli Bingham, Mike Filly, Giles Dickerson, Tom Churchill, Ben Nevile, Peter Wohelski, Jane Fitz, Andy Blake, Mike Gwertzman, Lee Groves, Ian Guthrie, Scott Findley, Aaron Michelson, Marco Ricompensa and Jason Edwards.
