Re: Are Netlabels Crap? was Re: Please... Someone
From: Paul Petrick Talk about being damned if you do and damned if you don't: 1. Too much to crap to look through vs. too little availability (or too much delay) 2. Too easy to distribute vs. too expensive to press. 3. Too many poor quality productions vs. too few risky releases. 4. Too many DJs with the same flavor of the month vs. too few DJs with the means or opportunity to find or even expose themselves to what's new. 5. Too many producers who can't even play an instrument vs. too many good producers ignored by established labels. Putting on my economist hat for second (and no, I'm not an economist, I stole the hat): There's no doubt that digital distribution and its low cost has commoditized music. And while that's good for accessibility and consumers' wallets, it also means that more people are willing to jump into the game. Consequently, as a consumer you end up with more stuff with less quality control that you have to sift through. That's the price you pay for the accessibility and lower cost. Additionally, all the new software today means that DJs and producers can create with less expertise and in less time than it took years ago. That contributes further to more stuff, but not necessarily more GOOD stuff. The barriers to entry on the production and distribution side have obviously been greatly reduced. On one hand, I think that has led to a democratization of both music creation and distribution. On the other hand, having the minority view in a democracy, which is where I often find myself, sucks balls. -paul Does this ring a bell for anyone? You take the good, you take the bad, you take 'em both, and there you have The Facts of Life.....Oooooh, I feel the inspiration for a remix coming on :-P Previous: Cristian E.
