New Reliable Records compilation...

Hey team,

It¹s always a pleasure to be able to review good new NZ house material, and
the new CD "Sun Valley Sounds 2" from Reliable Recordings has it in spades.

Many of you will recall I used to do some work with Reliable, and while
we've gone in different directions now, Joost and his team are continuing to
produce some of the best house output from these shores.

The disc signals it¹s intent from the outset, with UK refugee Dick Johnson¹s
insistent deep house groover "Dusty¹s Problem". This cut marries documentary
vocals with lush bass, and simple chord work in an old-skool Paper
Recordings vein. Smooth juice for the later dancefloor hours.

Fourth on the playlist, Cuffy and Leon D step up the heat with the Chicago
influenced chug of "Your Love". Rich synthesis galore, catchy bouncing
percussion, and extra tight sequencing courtesy of Mr Dahl make it
infectiously catchy, despite being arranged as an out-and-out floor cut.
This is the show-stealer of the compilation, make sure to turn up the stereo
every time it hits!

Aucklands favourite Tongan DJ, Soane, throws in an appearance with "Song for
Sesilia", which is all live bass and disco tinged noodling. Those from NZ
will recognise this as a sound more specific to our northern city... Yes,
even this tiny isle has local sub-styles!

Newcomer Daniel Ward turns in a Basement Jaxx inspired stomper with his
track "Filthy". Acid basslines, bells and siren-like blasts make this one
for the power hour.

Towards the end, the compilation¹s presenters Joost Langeveld and Roger
Perry dish out a new Reactor Music contribution, "Rainy Day". This hypnotic
groover employs spoken vocals, piano riffs, and plinky keys and ends up a
vibrant cross between Croydon and local styles.

All up, a great comp that¹s been getting heaps of playtime in the car.
Reliable has international distribution, so keep an eye out for this, it
should pop up on Juno and other well-stocked online retailers.

Also, I realise I'm late to the party on this one, but I wanted to mention
Brett Johnson¹s "Flashback" (Scenic). This is tough electronic house at it¹s
mesmerizing best, pounding and bleeping like a brilliant update of Special
Agents Kindred Spirit. Check it if you haven't already.

Cheers!
Phil
